Fish: Common Carp

For all the weirdos like me. Spring fly fishing for carp

I've been waiting for conditions to be good to chase after some carp on the fly!

A couple days ago I had a little over an hour of free time to fish, landed a nice 8 lb carp out of a local creek! Check out the video if you want. If you're not a carp weirdo like me... Well more for me :) [log in for link]

This forum might be boring without some weirdos. Takes some talent to pull that off. Looks like good clean fun to me.

AWB that is on my list! Those fish seem like a real challenge.

Barnacles thanks! I am not a great fly fisherman though to be honest. I feel like most intermediate fly fisherman could pull it off with practice and patience. You learn a lot just watching how these fish behave. It's like anything really. Time on the water, trial and error, and a good attitude when fishing is tough will go a long ways.

I hooked 3 the other day in a lake on flies, landed none. I thought I was fishing for panfish. One almost got into my backing before getting off. Trout are kind of sluggish now, not Carp!

nparker where at? :P Just kidding. You don't need to give up your spots. Plenty of places to catch carp around here. My first Carp I caught on accident while fly fishing for Crappie. From there I became addicted.

Carp are in most of the front-range lakes. Deeper, colder lakes with little vegetation don't seem to have as many. The problem is that they can be about anywhere in the lake, deep or shallow. They do seem to prefer shallow water most of the time. Like catfish, they eat whatever is available.
