Fish: Yellow Perch

Catch and Cook Perch/Bluegill - Pike Bonus

Post By: Team CO.F.F.      Posted: 1/13/2022 1:37:08 PM     Points: 291
Went out recently with the GF to get a catch and cook for perch tacos accomplished. My GF also had never caught a yellow perch or eaten one before this day either so I figured that would be exciting. The day was great, sun was shining and the wind was off and on but nothing too bad.

Swedish pimple green and loud 1/16oz jigs were the answer with mealies/waxies. We caught a handful of keepers and also a handful of tiny ones too.

Fun thing about this was Cheyenne (GF) landed a monster gill with a hand tied fly of hers that I feel imitates a wax worm. Toward the end of the fishing, she landed her first northern pike as well. She was ecstatic and didn't stop talking about it for days!! On top of that, she loved the perch tacos (who doesn't?)...My GF is falling in love with ice fishing, so that makes me a happy camper.

Hope you all enjoy the pics and video link below!!

Yum. I can't think of too many things better than perch and bluegill. That darn pike would have made a few fine tacos.

I used to eat Pike all the time up in Minnesota when I lived there, these days not so much. Just not much pike fishing on my side of the state so I feel bad keeping them...Not to mention, this lake has a bad stunted perch problem so the toothy guys help with that some😀

Besides, that looks kinda more like a tiger musky. If so, it would be under legal size to keep.

Nice video as usual - regarding that toad bluegill, I remember reading somewhere that CPW caught some gills from other area lakes that have trophy sized ones and planted them in that lake to augment the population. Lets hope they take off.

Tyler - not to worry, I am sure it was just one of many that were added to the mix. That pike you released likely already ate a bunch of them, lol.
