Fish: Yellow Perch

Short morning for Yellow Perch

Incredible time out ice fishing a few days ago with my older sister and her BF from AUSTRALIA neither of which have been ice fishing before. Sean (the BF) let me know there is only a few places in Australia that get snow at all. He thought the time out was "Magical"😀

The weather couldn't have been more agreeable and the fish bite was very active!! We ran into a big school of Yellow Perch and for the hour and a half we fished, the action was non-stop🎣 I feel if everyone's first ice fishing experience was this, everyone would be doing it lol.

The Green Swedish pimple and soft plastic perch eye with a 1/32oz silver tungsten jig were the winners for bites! Mealworms on the swedish pimple.

We got a handful of keepers and all the smaller ones I kept for a fish stock...Everyone got a handful of fish and everyone had a great time out in the warm sunny weather! Hope you enjoy the action below!

I have been wanting to get up there for early ice, but just have not made it yet. Those perch eyes work and the real ones are even better. They also work for trout through the ice. Good stuff. Your sister's little giggle was the best background music for a fishing video. Great Stuff!

Can't wait to get into a pile of those. Still waiting for good ice where I live.

I love to cook and I always have frozen jars of beef stock, chicken, veg and turkey but haven't made fish stock. Gotta try that. Any pointers???

We were only out there for about an hour and 45 minutes, I was more focused on just getting them constant action. Figured I would've marked something big, curious to see the action but nothing swam by. Bringing the braid and other devices for pike next time!!

I am going to try the real ones next time...Funny you say that for trout, my biggest trout through the ice was last year on the soft plastic perch eye haha...It was really good to know my sister and her BF had a really good time. They don't fish much at all, so I figured a constant stream of perch would be a good time out haha. Happy Holidays man!

I'm going to do a catch and cook on the ice next time with tacos. Hopefully you get some good ice soon. We're currently getting hammered up here with snow and cold weather.

Sorry Greg, didn't realize you asked this before responding to your other post...I keep it really simple. Here's a video link to what I do

Go to about 11:30 in the video. The stock is light and the few people that have tried it said they enjoyed it. Last year I made a really good seafood soup with crab legs, shrimp, and some more fish with the stock!

I will have to think about it--depending on the type of fish. I will tell you one ingredient that goes in my chix, turkey and beef stock. I always sneak in some vegetable bullion and celery salt. You dont want it overpowering but you want enough to taste. As far as the fish stock goes I was thinking about using it as a base for a jambalaya or seafood stew with baby corn in there. Never made clam chowder in mass quantity but I bet fish stock would be good in there in some amount. Merry Christmas.
