Lake: Boyd Lake

Last Call For Boating

Post By: Skookshunter      Posted: 11/29/2021 1:04:51 PM     Points: 2827
The bite is hot, but if you're a boater then some of the local lakes are going to be closing on Wednesday. I'm unable to get back out on Boyd but the lake has been treating me well the past few weeks. Heavy metal has been the ticket for multi-species. If you're interested, here is a video on how I've been getting the job done lately. Enjoy!

Looks like fun!

Sure is nice to have the boat ramp all to yourself.

Very well done. The slow motion tail-walker was cool. My parents used to call that method "doodle-socking". The whites would always thump it on the fall. Sure works good this time of year.

It is nice having little boat traffic on Boyd for sure. I have never heard of "doodle socking" before, but I'll have to remember that from now on! It's a shame that the lake gets shut down on a year like this. We could see open water for a long time if the temps don't start dropping soon!

Well I made it out for the final day in 2021 and like in past years I was the final boat off the lake. Always hate to say goodbye to the lake for the season. They were barricading the ramp when I left. Counted five other boats that came out to join me. Did catch a few trolling but I have got to be the worst fisherman for using blade baits and jigging raps. Spent half the day and tried many different areas without a hit on them.

There are definitely some nuances to fishing them that seem to make a big difference on some days. I was out there last weekend and noticed a few things I had to do to get bites.
First, I couldn't get a bite on a blade bait or a size 7 jiggin rap on a spot where I was marking fish. When I switched to a size 9 jigging rap I started getting bites.
Second, I started getting more bites when I added more slack in my line before a sharp pop of the rod. I couldn't feet the bite, but when I popped the rod the fish was on.
Third, timing was important. Towards the end of the day, the jigging rap stopped getting bit so I went back to the blade bait and started catching fish again.
Those fish sure can be picky sometimes!

Thanks for the tips Scott. I guess I just need to keep practicing until it works.

Lol. Eric and I have fished against each other in kayak tournaments for a few years and have gotten to know each other through that. When he started working for Eagle Claw, he offered me a spot on their regional staff so we work together a little bit here and there. We just so happened to both have plans to fish Boyd that day.
