Echo Lake

Does anyone know if Echo Lake is frozen over yet ? It's at 10,600 ft. so it does freeze early but the wind can be a problem for the ice and the fisherman.

Are they allowing ice fishing there again?

Echo is iced up
I've heard its open to ice fishing
Also hear people are still getting kicked off
I haven't seen any signs that say stay off ice

I called Denver Mt Parks and the Ranger I talked to said they do allow ice fishing. They don't want you to leave you gas powered auger laying on the ice because some gas might leak out and contaminate the water.

I couldn't find it when I looked just now, but I swear they closed it to ice fishing unless that recently changed. Who manages that lake?

Wreckstar, Denver Mountain Parks owns the lake.

Never fished Echo, might be a nice quick little trip. Do they close the road once the snow really starts??

The road by Echo Lake is SH 103, which does not close during the winter. The road to the top of Mt. Evans does close.

Echo is a good lake to ice fish early to nock off the the cob webs and that lake winter kills. I fished it all summer and there are some really nice fish in there. It was like old echo lake.

Went up and checked it out this weekend. Talked to the head ranger, and he said yes, you can ice fish Echo. In fact, he just took down the signs on Friday. He said they didn't allow it, because the lake is run under Denver Parks and rec. Since they don't allow any ice fishing in the Denver metro area parks, it was easy to also apply the rule @ Echo. (That's why there was no ice fishing last year). So yes, you can ice fish Echo this year. Hope this helps :-)

Wingman, thanks for the official update, Is the lake frozen enough to fish on the ice? What about open water fishing?

Just to give an update : 12/27, couldn't find any water deeper than 3ft, plus weeds in just about every hole drilled. Went around the entire lake & across the middle. One of the weirdest things I've ever experienced.

To top it off, a car went off the road, (roads were icy), into the creek, on the way down. Lots of emergency vehicles there, but it didn't look good. Stay safe everyone, & slow down

Wingman, not surprising to find shallow water most places as the lake is only about 7ft deep when full . The weeds cover 100% of the lake bottom making it shallower all over. The lake hasn't been full the last three years due to an error made when they re-did the road. C-dot re-routed one of the run off areas the wrong direction, but it was corrected this year and the lake added about 1 1/2 ft. so it should return to normal level in the next couple years. There is no creek or stream coming into the lake only runoff from snow or rain in the summer.
