Fish: Splake

Loaded Spillway, Splake

Post By: Team CO.F.F.      Posted: 10/28/2021 4:59:24 PM     Points: 316
Decided to switch things up recently and go fish a spillway that has been on my radar for a while. We got there and it wasn't very promising to look at...No flows in or out of the spillway and no rises initially...I sat there with my GF for a few minutes just looking at the water, and we saw a trout rise up.

We then got our rods out and the action was awesome!! This little puddle was loaded with trout...We caught a healthy rainbow, a near 20" Brown, and a big handful of splake! The splake all were taking 2" swimbaits and the brown I got was on a weighted nymph, jigging the TBH Gummy Crane Fly!

I wouldn't have expected things to turn out this way from first glance, but hey...that's fishing sometimes lol! Hope you all enjoy the video and pictures!

I had no idea that there were Splake in there, that must be something relatively new. Seems like you kind of hit the jackpot with your hunch.

I was pretty shocked to see that myself! Have you ever fished it? Haha i was happy for sure, especially because I didn't think we would catch anything at first.

Thank You Harper!! I'm betting there has to be one low 20 to mid twenty trout in there though haha

I used to fish there often in the spring when the lake was spilling. There would often be some decent rainbows moving up there to spawn with the browns right behind them, but that was many years ago.

I had to ask google what is a splake. With a name like that I was expecting something like a mullet.
