Oh, what a day! I have caught spawning Kokanee in the dream stream before, but they were the females. One was even an M.A.

This time though I did not get the M.A. but I did get the fish I have been dreaming of for a long time ...

The big Hook Jaw-Humpback Spawning male!

This guy was 19 inches and FAT! His back was almost 3 inches thick.

... and he was FUN to catch!

The third picture is the first one I caught. Also a male but not quite as impressive.

Those are fun to catch, they are still good for smoking but that's all we could find as far as eating goes. We used to catch a bunch in the Blue River above Green Mountain Reservoir years ago, a real battle to land in that river current. Yes the kokes do go all the way to Dillon Dam, of course there are very few Kokes left to do that right now but they have started to restock Green Mountain so maybe in 3 or 4 years they will return.

Is keeping kokanee on the dream stream allowed? I realize the rules state catch and release for all species, but we are talking about a fish that is going to die anyways. Just seems like there should be an exception.

Tubby T,
Yes, Dream Stream Kokes are catch and release only, I believe they still use them to gather eggs for stocking throughout the state as they do over at Gunnisons Roaring Judy hatchery.

…Not just in the Dream Stream, but all of the stream to 11-Mile itself is restricted fishing, and ALL FISH must be returned to the water immediately. I think that portion of the South Platte is posted.
