Fat Brookies and a Hailstorm

Post By: Team CO.F.F.      Posted: 9/30/2021 5:00:28 PM     Points: 110
Never fished in a hailstorm before! Got to cross that off the list for the last day of our camping trip from the other weekend😀🎣

Walked into a lake that we've never fished before with the waders on and float tubes over the shoulders. It was a cold morning so it was pretty comfortable wearing all of that. The lake isn't stocked or at least doesn't have a stocking report so we weren't sure what to expect...As we arrived, we saw rises throughout the lake and felt pretty confident about getting into some fish! It was a finicky bite, and after trying several different presentations, I went with what crushed it for me last time I went for Brookies the TBH Gummy Crane Fly Larvae weighted nymph...And yes casting it. The Brook trout went crazy for it and I landed some really nice ones throughout the morning.

The hailstorm was off and on throughout the morning but it didn't deter our attitudes and it was a fun experience overall😀🎣 Hope you all enjoy the pictures and/or video!

COFF just be careful the hot spot police will be after you. Don’t catch any nice fish that’s the secret to avoiding them.

Love those Brookies. Wish they'd grow that fat in my local creek. Glad we don't get those baseball hailstorms around here. Those will ruin a camping trip.

Too hail you say, glad you stuck it out. I have never fished in a hail storm my whole life, lucky for me the last time I came close to getting hailed upon was at Cherry Creek Res. a couple of years ago. I got to the car and by the time I headed out the gate there was golf ball sized hail and it left many dents in my car. I'm very glad I left when I did or there would have been damage to my head ( no comments required) and other places would have been bruised. Great video as always, keep up the good work much appreciated.

Just wondering if you felt the fall spawn was on?

The last time I was in there a few years ago, it was all dinks. I hiked in there and fished it through the ice in January. Nice to see the size has significantly increased. I will have to give it another shot for sure. Many more years ago it also had some decent sized fish. Seems to seesaw back and forth from all little guys to a fair number of good ones. During open water, though, they have always been pretty finicky.

Thanks for the kind words, it was a blast getting up there and getting into some good fish. Fishing in the hail was pretty fun, stung a little but fun haha

It's why I don't put the name of most lakes I fish, unless they're a really popular place. Haha good point though

YEESH! Glad the hail didn't get that big while we were out on the belly boat. I would've woke up after the storm was over with a concussion!!

I know they spawn during these months but I couldn't tell...It's a big reason why I just let all of them go and didn't keep any. Especially since the lake doesn't appear to be stocked at all.

Oh wow, that would be quite a long and nasty hike to get here in the winter...Cool you made the trip though for ice, and really cool to hear that the lake is doing better compared to the last time. I would bet there are some MA brook trout in there

I caught a few of those fatso brookies at that lake yesterday. Beautiful fall day with no one else around. It took me a couple of hours to figure them out, but then it was fish on. One 14 incher was actually pulling my kayak around. For sure not a place to advertise as it is too small to take much pressure.

Thursday looks like maybe the last day for a shot at the GM. For the following week it looks snow just about every day and night. It's that time of the year for the GM.
