Lake: The Loch (Vale) - RMNP
Fish: Cutthroat Trout

The Loch

Fished Loch Vale, RMNP 9/2 from about 8am to 2pm with some intermittent weather conditions. Fish could be seen all day cruising but actual takes/strikes where generally light. Only saw 3 other fisherman and fisherwoman. But they didn't fish very long.
Ant patterns did produce the most fish for me. Although I took several on spinning gear as well. Due to the lake size and shape, I would recommend fly and bubble if you are not a proficient fly caster (and maybe even if you are). Rises were very consistent in the middle, guessing of course, is a 50 yard cast.
Normal amount of hiker traffic and tourist interactions. If you go, at this time Bear Lake Road is under a special permit system. I did get a permit ($2 online & printed) for the 5-7am slot and was able to park at the trailhead I wanted.

thats awesome! one of my favorite hikes in the park and some surprisingly good fishing most of the time. did you stay on the Loch the whole time or did you venture up to the 2 upper ponds?

I didn't go to any other lakes on this hike. I had planned to but the weather was pretty sketchy. So I focused solely on the Loch. I did speak several hikers who did go to both Glass lake and Sky pond. They did not see anyone fishing either of those two lakes. They said they saw fish activity at both.

Been about 2 months since I went up there. The bite shifted on me between the morning and afternoon. If a lake is 🔥, I'd stay there.
