BIG CATS Were Feeding All Afternoon-Evening

Post By: FishHuntNow      Posted: 8/16/2021 8:07:04 PM     Points: 1709
My friend Greg invited me out to try some cat fishing, so I decided to take the offer and join him for a relaxing evening. I did not realize all this time how easy it is to rig up for catfish and relax until you get a bite. It must have been beginners luck but we got on a excellent bite and landed 5 decent catfish.

I immediately got addicted and decided to get my own rig setup call James (thefishingjunkie on the forum) and go out the following week. I ended up catching my PG cat at 35 inches and 18Lbs a bit skinny but a thrill! Thanks James for helping me net it. Here is a video [log in for link]

Some pictures of the fish and the rig!

I ended up catching a walleye on a chicken breast marinated in Koolaid as I was trying to retrieve it for a recast.

That's a really good video. Kudos on the rig described about 16 minutes in --- a really good trick to get your bait up out of the mud and weeds. I thought I had seen about everything,, but catching a walleye on Koolaid marinated chicken breast is pretty exclusive.

Hey! Thank you very much for watching bud. I initially explained in the start but did a poor job doing it so I took Greg's version and left it in. My rig was simple with the weight and size 6 hook but he caught the big mamas. I think when it floats up higher over the weeds the cats can get a visual on it even though their all sense and smell.

I don't think i'll ever catch a walleye on koolaid and chicken again a memory of a life time. :D

Awesome tanks!!! Chicken breast soaked in Kool Aid. Had not heard of that delicacy........... Note to self. Next weekend fry up some catfish with a side of chicken breast marinated in Kool Aid. On the thing..........

Haha only way to do it! Man I can’t remember the last time I had koolaid.

That santee cooper rig is all the rage down here in SC for the big cats in the river. We're throwing much heavier sinkers though (3oz) due to the current. I've seen some real monsters hit that rig. They say it allows the big boys to get it without digging for it. (I've seen some that look like they could eat a small child!)

Some real hog blues down here for sure, I've not gone after them yet since moving down though. Got the kayak out for the first time earlier this week and managed a 19.5 inch large mouth tossing lipless cranks in the lake. Waiting for this weekend for the remnants of Fred to go away and MAYBE they'll lower the flows in the river so I can chase some big boys again. Nothing like needing 50 pound braid minimum for main line when you're cat fishing....That's what the locals all run, 50 and some even more than that. All of them with monster surf rods and heavy braid throwing 3-5 ounce sinkers and shark hooks!

Shad is the bait of choice down here too, fresh not frozen although frozen WILL work just not as well as fresh caught. They're allowed cast nets for taking bait down here as well so that helps. I plan to order one for spring next year, nothing beats fresh bait without the markup right?!

One guy I was fishing with in early July when I came on vacation was throwing whole shad down, or bluegill, or white perch filets and he was absolutely SMOKING the big ones. I wish I'd gotten pictures of HIS fish.

Nice video as always though, and educational for those that have never seen the Santee rig.

D-Zilla,

Glad you're loving it down there bud. You are blessed to have such great catfish there in South Carolina, I'm part of handful of Catfishing Facebook pages and the amount of big catfish I see come from that state is amazing. They would make Colorado state records.

I am learning the more people I talk to catching a blue gill or a shad out of a lake and using it with cats without freezing it too much gives the best chances but so far I've had a good experience with frozen shad too. The Santee Cooper rig definitely netted more cats, when I went out the next day i use the size 6 hook with the 2 oz weights that is when I got the 35incher, I've noticed over cast was giving better results too.

I want to get into some big cats and would love to take a trip down to South Carolina at some point.

Thanks for watching the video, I appreciate the comment. Going to try my my luck again Sunday.
