Fish: Channel Catfish

I caught a channel catfish on my fly rod!

Post By: Troutbisquits      Posted: 7/27/2021 11:01:09 AM     Points: 2633
I caught my first ever Channel Catfish fly fishing! I was actually targeting white bass on my 4 wt and this fish took a size 8 black kreelex! I was super stoked because I have wanted to catch a catfish on my fly rod for a long time. Here is the video if you are interested in checking it out! [log in for link]

By itself the catfish catch did not really make a video, so I also included some fun fly fishing in an urban creek that has a good variety of warm (and cold) water species!

I've caught a few tons of catfish in my life, but never one on the flyrod. Great video. Also never seen a net with scales. I have to get one of those. Well done / thanks.

Congrats Troutbisquits .3 lbs in most of these urban ponds is a decent kitty ( least better than avg) . I agree with Barnacles, that net is kinda slick. Catfish are predators. But if I remember correctly . They just don’ t see real good. They are nearsighted as I recall. Thats why they tend to be bait orientated .They rely more on their scene of taste and their lateral line more than their eyes. If gotten a few late spring on jerkbaits. But they are a rare artificial bait catch indeed!

Hey thanks everyone! Yeah I love this net. It was i gift from my mother in law. The scale is supposed to be super accurate and weighs up to 14lbs. My fishing goal this year is to catch a fish that bottoms it out. Have come close with a few carp already, but not quite yet.

Anyways Barnacles and Smelly it is from McLean angling ( a New Zealand Company). Mad river outfitters sells them, this is the one I have. [log in for link]
