Bluegill or Green Sunfish

Post By: Mattastrophy      Posted: 6/13/2021 11:02:53 PM     Points: 2090
Harriman Lake on this site lists bluegill but does not list Green Sunfish.

I just caught one today (Just a little guy) making it hard to specifically identify. But to me it looks more like a Green Sunfish.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife also list Red Ear Sunfish in Harriman lake as well. But this site does not!

Anyway, Can one of you help us all distinguish specific details that differentiate the three?

Well that's better than anything I caught today. Definitely looks like a pure green to me. They seem to find their way into places where they're not supposed to be.
Here's a pretty good link to help identify different types.

Thanks Barnacles. That is a great site!

I have caught both the bluegill and green sunfish before so I thought I recognized it was the Green Sunfish. But I do not catch them enough to know if the smaller/younger ones are more similar.

That link will be a very useful tool. I am also getting more familiar the more I catch these guys.

Thank you for your help everyone.
