Toothy critter on 5X

As title reads. This weekend I was set up in south park targeting big trout, and this guy decided to grab my fly. I had 5x going to my fly he took and can still hardly believe I managed to land this guy. You dont really need to fish 5x where I was but usually its never an issue if your drag is right.

After fighting for 5 or so minutes I finally got a look at his head and couldnt believe I was hooked up with a pike, nor could I believe I still had him on after all the head shakes and runs. Thank god for a good net job that went way smoother than expected after fighting him for awhile. Went to unhook him and the line caught his teeth and immediately sliced the line and my finger a bit.

~35 inches, my first pike, and biggest fish Ive landed on the fly! Just wanted to dont always need heavy line for these guys! Sometimes 5x and a small fly will do the trick, if you get lucky! lol

Ended up keeping him for some future taco nights. He had a whole 11 inch rainbow trout in his stomach.

Edit: he took a rust colored wooly bugger, and was my first fish of the day after missing many small takes and finally getting my act together

Congrats on your luck in landing that monster, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. Those larger pike can be good eating but still a pain in the a#$ to clean, with all those disconnected bones. Just think of all the small trout you saved from getting eaten, some could grow to trophy size.

That's an awesome catch on a fly. Taco night sounds like a good plan. A dude in Alaska showed me how to fillet those things to get around the Y-bones. Like everything else in life, it's on youtube now.

barnacles, I followed that video! This was my first time cleaning and that method is easy enough and came out practically boneless. Many lbs of tasty looking meat. Dinner tonight

For the record this fish was just at the top end of what I would keep, and i wasnt even planning on harvesting this day. Ive never really ate pike so it should be a treat.

I have a new found appreciation for them really. A year ago I hooked into something much bigger in the exact same spot and fought the I have closure and know what that fish was last year. It seems like pike take off right when you hook them, where as the large 20-25inch bows havent in my experience

N thanks guys, this will be hard to beat for was quite heavy as well
