Horsetooth Satanka Bay Closed to Non Motorized Boats?!

Post By: Big Wolf      Posted: 4/10/2021 9:51:43 AM     Points: 347
Yesterday I was surprised to learn that Larimer County DNR created a "Paddlecraft Only Zone" in Satanka Bay which closes the western half of the bay to all motorized boating, including fishing! Thanks to Chad LaChance for sharing it on his FB page.

This is a terrible idea for so many reasons, it's hard to keep count. LCDNR passing a rule with no public input, citing "safety" but not addressing the largest safety issues with the nonmotorized boaters, granting special privileges to a specific group (who doesn't pay additional costs to use the surface of the lake) over other groups, etc, etc.

I wrote an email to the county commissioners expressing my concerns, and within a few hours received a reply from Mr. Kefalas, informing me that the commissioners have requested a public meeting regarding the Satanka Bay "issue". He also attached a "FAQ" which does not answer any substantial questions.

But it does answer is how LCDNR decided to implement this new rule: governing by Facebook analytics. Yes, really. At the bottom of the FAQ it reads:

Analytics for Facebook post regarding Satanka announcement on our LCDNR page.

38% comment support/celebrate (paddlers, kayakers)
(the other 20-30% are commenting on off topic subjects or non-related issues)

The "FAQ" is attached to this post.

I don't know about you, but I can't wait for the public meeting so I can share my comments in person. Hopefully several of you will be able to do the same!

Chad posted something about this on here fairly recently. Anyone who has an opinion on this should voice it. CL's voice may carry a bit more weight than the average person's, but this is something that impacts the public as a whole, and as such necessitates an appropriate response from the public as a whole. This will become a weather-test for future similar experiments, I have to think.

I'm all for paddleboarding, but drive by Bear Creek SP / Soda lakes sometime in the summer and see if you can count the number of people out there. It's crazy. Freedom of choice and whatnot, but it looks like a giant bowl of multicolored Cheerios. Count me out of that. More and more, it looks like the answer is just having to drive farther and farther away from Denver to get away from the riff raff. Soon Gunnison will be the hot happening new SUP destination for Lakewood moms!
Maybe this is a way to concentrate people who SUP to certain areas, which may be better in the longrun. Not sure to be honest. I can see both schools of thought there.

SUP's are like politics. People show up and expect others to put up with it because they miss the "salt life" or whatever the rear window stickers from refugees from the left coast say. If they really want to surf that bad, they're more than welcome to take their SUP fake surfboards and politics back to Cali.

Getting a public hearing from the county is a good start at least..

Oh no! Just realized the subject line on the post was not what I intended to write... Sorry about that! What I meant to say was "...Satanka Bay Closed to Fishing Boats?!" Ugh...

I just dont see the need for closing a portion of the lake off to boating. My family and I have paddle boards, kayaks and we boat at horsetooth. I think the county is trying to keep the paddleboarders in a confined area to keep from having to rescue them on the main parts of the lake. I believe they just went about it the wrong way. I read in a different article that they had 29 water related deaths last year. Sounds like most of their efforts were fishing out paddleboarders who got blown off course. I am sure they see that as a waste of resources. Instead of restricting boats, They can all comingle in the bays and coves since it is wakeless anyways. I have paddleboarded at the tooth and the thought of being on the main lake doesnt interest me in the slightest. The coves are a great place for them and if they want to venture outside of that, thats fine too. Maybe signs recommending paddleboarders refrain from the main lake. It wouldnt be a rule or punishable, but a recommendation. Am I wrong?

Fascism has many faces. I've been meaning to canoe Horsetooth but I think I'll pass it up.

Showing results for fascism

Fascism (/ˈfæʃɪzəm/) is a form of far-right, authoritarian ultranationalism characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition and strong regimentation of society and of the economy which came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe.

VERY IMPORTANT: write an email ASAP to County Commissioner John Kefalas at

He is the person spearheading the review of the closure.

This closure sets an ugly precedent. If you want to stand up for equal access to water boaters, not paddlers, not taxpayers, are paying for. CL

Hey all, this regulation is being reconsidered...they need opinions so please email them! Whether or not you fish at Horsetooth is not relevant...this regulation will be used to as a precedent at other public bodies of water. Regardless how you feel about it, please provide your opinion! CL
