River: Big Thompson River - Canyon

been waiting for open water spring fly fishing?

I was hoping the warm weather recently would create some may-like conditions on the Big Thompson yesterday and it did. River was completely free of ice and snow for miles below the dam into the canyon. trout were seen and spooked everywhere and were spread out in the shallows and seams feeeding and not just stacked up in deep holes. Also saw a couple feeding frenzies on hatches. that canyon is pretty open in the sunshine so it's fishing like it's a month later in there. if you've been dying to get out, i would suggest the canyon up there. right below the dam was loaded with guys but there are plenty of more willing trout downstream and miles of water. I just used my usual set up of black foam ant with hare's ear dropper. got many hits on the ant when the sun came out but 2/3rds of action on the nymph dropper

Bite chasers will love this.

Thanks, Refreshing to see someone share some specifics. Doubt I'll ever drive that far, but you never know. I think if we all did this, the "bite-chasers" might be overwhelmed. It seemed like I had the Arkansas River all to myself all winter. I couldn't believe nobody was out there. Thought maybe I went to heaven. I complain as much as anyone, but we live in paradise.

no one needs to worry about this river...there is like 6-10 MILES of water next to a major highway. it's no secret. the tailwater is one of the most crowded there is but people stay in a 300 yard stretch and there are miles of fishy looking river down thru the canyon that anyone could see held trout. i doubt anyone really thinks there is any secret there, just letting people know it's not frozen, even many miles below the dam, which is odd because lower elevation stuff still is. it's all about the sun. enjoy
