River: Big Thompson River - Loveland

I-25 oil spill and the big thompson

Post By: fishthumpre      Posted: 3/21/2021 7:17:34 AM     Points: 4414
Havenít seen anything on news to date about whether that 11k gallons of oil got into the big Thompson, but it sure looked like a straight shot into the river. Or maybe that big pond they dredged out a few years ago adjacent to big Thompson ponds. The 2 remaining state ponds will probably be buffered from the oil, but i fear for the river. Wonder if all the snow will slow the oil flow or just make for really nasty snowballs. Those hazmat crews are darned good at what they do, but it sure looks like the spill was in worse possible location.

Hadn't heard about that one, but there was also a fuel truck crash on 50 Friday between Canon and Cotopaxi. Some got in the Arkansas. You're right on about those hazmat crews.

I canít believe that incident wasnít news-worthy! Seems like reporting in Fremont County is non-existent. Thanks for the news, and I hope there wasnít too much damage done by any fuel spilled in either river.

Here's the only thing I've found on the Highway 50 spill.

Thanks for the info Barnacle. Must have missed it in the paper.
Really glad the diesel didnít get to the Big T River...11,000 gallons is a lot of fuel!

I see the report about none of the oil getting into the Big Thompson, and sure hope that's the case. The water closest to the spill looks like the big gravel pit immediately west of I-25 and south of the I-25 bridge over the Big T. It just filled completely from ground water over the past year privately owned and just east of the two state wildlife area ponds that survived the flood of 2013.
