Lake: Sheldon Lake (City Park)

Tell the city to keep Sheldon Lake (FOCO) open for ice fishing

Post By: TyedUp      Posted: 1/29/2021 3:48:56 PM     Points: 565
The other day I was kicked off Sheldon Lake along with another gentleman for ice fishing. After a quick call to the city of Fort Collins parks/rec they apparently decided about a month ago to start enforcing a no ice fishing rule on the lake for the first time ever. I have enjoyed icing that lake for the last 10 years for a quickie after work along with countless others.

If you value the only ice fishing opportunity in the city I encourage you to contact the parks and rec dept, manager of parks Rob Crabb rcrabb@fcgov.com 970.221.6660.

Maybe hearing from enough local fishermen will persuade them to keep it open.

Thx.

Covid is changing a lot of things.First responders have their hands full with the virous and may be behind the City inforcing the no ice fishing rule.
Just how it could be seen . . . .

Seems like a good cause to me. Having a place like that where you can go after work is all some of us need to stay happy. Might be worthwhile to keep asking why. Sometimes these things are all about liability. If that's all it is, it might be solvable. Punch is right though, no insurance will protect you from negligence (not having help available) that might be the worry. Still, people need to fish.

Sounds like you have been breaking the rules for 10 years and getting away with it. You had a good run. Maybe going about this the wrong way imo. I'de reach out to the city council and try to get the rules changed. Not complain because you got caught.

From my experience, most lakes that do not allow ice fishing are that way for a reason. Usually a fluctuating water level creating unsafe ice.

I agree with the above.. call it a win that you got away with it as long as you did.

Best of luck getting it changed.

The long-time policy for public water within the FC city limits was that city parks were open for ice fishing, while Natural Areas were not. I don't recall where I read/heard that, but it was certainly the practice for more than the last decade.

I work for the parks department and my crew chief in the southwest parks has always told me that ice fishing is allowed in the Fort Collins parks but not natural areas. I ice fish the ponds in our parks all the time with no problems. I have no idea what the guys up north are trying to do tho at city park.

The COVID excuse is a lame one, sounds like they are trending towards Metro Denver area policies. I always found the policy difference on the natural areas in regards to ice fishing from the parks up there kinda humorous. And to the posters saying they have been breaking the law for years, kinda hard to hide when you’re in the middle of a lake on the ice in a park...

I like those Natural Areas in FoCo hope they don’t get scared of non motorized boating at some point.

Yea . . .tell that to the family of someone that dies because the first responders were busy saving an ice fisherman.First responders are spread thin enough right now . . . .I'm doing all I can to ease their job . . .you?

You have the free will to stay on the hype train of fear as long as you like. Still waiting for a "journalist" to interview actuaries of large life insurance companies. Seems like the absolute best source of information on the subject. Virtue signaling fear is not virtuous in any way. You are free to keep it up. Grocery shop much---putting millions at risk? Ooops I did it again.........
