Ice Fishing Whitefish

Post By: Team CO.F.F.      Posted: 1/21/2021 12:22:21 PM     Points: 315
Got out to Rangely last weekend with my buddy to target Crappie, Carp, Catfish, and Mountain Whitefish! I was going for the Crappie and Whitefish, while my buddy was going for the Carp and Cats. No luck on the Carp and Cats - Hoping someone has some good ice fishing tips for us on those two specific species - But I did have some really good luck on the Whitefish!

Landed a wide variety of sizes...All were found in 10 feet or less of water and all caught on a 1/32oz Silver tungsten jig...Trailers being 7/8" Neki Soft plastic and live waxworms. Fun fish to catch and only the second time in my life I've ever caught them...First time was ice fishing the same reservoir last year.

Hope you guys enjoy the action! I did keep a couple to try and eat, tasted pretty good, very boney too haha.

Good catch - when I lived in Michigan in the 80s we used to fish for Whitefish off the piers in Luddington and Frankfort in November. We'd catch them with cooked salmon eggs - they were good eating. When travelling to upper Penninsula of MI, I would always buy locally smoked White Fish - very oily and delicious. One of my favorite things from those trips.

Cool. I've never caught one. Gotta chime in on the carp and cats though.
1/2 wheaties cereal, 1/2 oatmeal. Crush it into a powder and add just enough water to make a dough. Form a ball on a small treble hook & carp will eat it.
Favorite bait for winter catfish is Danny King's punch bait. Sometimes you can find it at Walmart, but you can order a pint online and it will last forever. It stinks, bad, but will bring in the cats.

Thanks man! That's really cool, I'm going to have to try and get some open water...Would like to get that MA off my list. I fried them and they were pretty good. Going to have to try smoking next time, I was being lazy lol. Are the ones up north related to these Mountain ones?

You have not lived till you eat smoked White Fish from a true Jewish Deli. I grew up in a home that had smoked white fish instead of smoked salmon . . .it was the best!!!!It was very oily, but much better than salmon.Mom and dad came here from Europe and they ate it . . .

Haha I believe last year when I caught one of these, you were one of the people that recommended I tried eating them. Unfortunately, I was being lazy that night and didn't want to go buy a refill on my propane so I just fried them...It was good but probably not as good as smoked.

I remember the smoked white fish we got came from a place on west Colfax, just west of Federal . . .it was smoked a warm color of gold . .the smoking made the skin very rubber like, you could peel the skin off in one piece and the flesh flaked off the bones very easy . . .the bones stayed together.
Artic Pacific fisheries on west Colfax. They sell the best smoked salmon/lox in the world.

I've never pickled anything, but am always willing to try something new...We fried ours and they came out pretty good...I kind of compare it to Grayling but more fishy and firm.

Dan, it was really delicious...I was lazy this night and didn't want to go to the store to get more propane for my smoker so we fried them...Tasted really good, firm meat and a little fishy but nothing too bad ( i personally don't mind fishy tastes). Next time I plan on smoking them, heading up to the river that flows into there this Spring....CPW electro-surveyor I know says there are whitefish in there that shatter the state record!!!!

Thanks Curtis! I would think so, we have never ice fished it that late but that area gets really cold. I can always scout it out some before hand. This is the reservoir though that I was telling you about that we do our carp/cat fishing tournaments at...The big one we've gotten 2nd two years in a row at. But absolutely would be down to meet up and fish it if we can!
