Lake: Trinidad Reservoir

Anybody ever fish Trinidad Res. through the ice?

My son and I were thinking of fishing for perch & other warm water species at Trinindad Res. In January or February. Does anyone have any experience fishing there on the ice? I have no information on freeze up dates or where to fish. Any help is appreciated. Thanks MG

Not sure there would be any decent ice, never heard of anyone icing it

The time I spent there the winters were pretty mild, you might bring open water gear in case its not frozen.

It does freeze some years but might be 5 year’s between fishable ice. If it does freeze it is for a short period.

I have friends that go over to Rifle Gap and ice fish for perch, I see that Rifle Gap is 5900 ft. in elevation. Trinidad Res. is 6200 ft in elevation. We were going to spend a couple of nights in the camper and fish hard for a couple of days, seems like a fun winter fishing trip. Can you think of any other good perch lakes that can be ice fished in Colorado. I'd prefer someplace in southeast Colorado.

I live down here in southern Colorado and would be shocked if there is fishable ice at Trinidad. The last time I remember good ice was 2007 I think and it only lasted a couple weeks.

One of my favorite lakes in the state to fish, but not through the ice. Be very cautious if there is ice. IMO a fall through the ice is not worth a 10” perch.
