Morning of Searching, found good ice

Post By: Team CO.F.F.      Posted: 12/1/2020 2:04:19 PM     Points: 42
Spent the morning hiking in and scouting ice on a lake that has tigers, browns, and some brookies in it...Got to the lake and started spud barring around...One spot I would be on 5" and a few feet over I would be on less then 2"...Got about 30-40 yards out and decided that any further would be too risky. Honeycomb spots everywhere and the ice wasn't the best quality anyway...started getting pretty spongy. Packed everything back up and walked back to the car to hit a different lake that had some good ice.

We got there and the edges were pretty sketchy. One spot my spud bar went through and made everything under me vibrate, fun feeling...a little zigging and zagging and we were out on 6" of solid ice and having a great time. Felt comfortable as we were only fishing 3-5 feet of water the whole day.

Hope you guys enjoy the video (pics if you don't have the time) and more importantly, be safe out there!!

Great video today especially the spud bar part. Good safety lesson, as I have said before never trust new or late season ice.

Thank you, with everything going on with people falling through this year, figured it should be re-emphasized. Glad you thought it was good! Hopefully some other lakes freeze soon that have some bigger trout in them!

Haha we've been itching for a very long time! Glad to be out on the ice for the past few weeks and glad nothing crazy has happened. I'll message you this week, hopefully late December we can get out on some ice together!!

Heading up to the Mesa on Friday and taking my ice picks and spud bar for sure. That spud bar has saved me from a dunking more than once. Good safety tips. Hoping to find water a little deeper than 4 ft since my sonar does not really even get a clear signal until 8-10 ft of water. But it looks like there were enough stockers where you were that a fish finder was not even really necessary. Good video as always.

Good luck and be safe up there...If I didn't have it this day, I would've have fallen through for sure haha. Ya honestly two of our first three trips we didn't need them at all, besides to get the water depth...just fun to look at I guess 😂😂 I may be heading up there this weekend or might go try something lower since it's been so cold over here...Hope your trip goes well tomorrow!
