I did not read that post . If any spot looks different give it a poke with a spud bar. I have a 20ft rope on my sled so my weight and the weight of the sled are spread out when checking the ice in front of me .

When I was much younger with better circulation I used to ice fish the Mile in the middle if the night alone without a shelter. Just a hand auger and a metal folding chair. I wouldn't go until late Dec or early January-to be safe. For some reason nobody wanted to go with me! One night I excitedly walked out from Sucker Cove about 100-125 yards to the North-Northeast. I drilled my first hole through 15-17 inches of ice. I drilled my second hole 4 feet from the first and the auger popped through after just a handful of turns. It had to be 2-3 inches. Needless to say---I gently stepped to back towards the first hole and was totally unnerved-afraid to walk back to the car for warm ups until daylight when hopefully other fishermen arrived.. Hate when that happens!! Young and dumb!!
