Marabou/Crappie Jig Madness

Post By: bharper      Posted: 11/20/2020 7:53:36 PM     Points: 247
Action packed day on the River fishing with my friend Chet. We combined for over 100 Trout today with over 70 of them on 1/8-1/4 ounce Jigs! Chet ended up with a few more fish. With the winds being 5 mph or less it made for ideal conditions throwing jigs. Black Jigs were the best producer with some good ones being caught on Brown/Orange Here’s my best Browns and Bow.

You guys are KILLING IT! Nice fish, and way to go once again.
(I still want to fish with you sometime!) 😁

I stumbled onto the brown and orange jig phenom a few years ago. I had some in my tackle that I had used for rock bass along the coast of SE Alaska. I was fishing the lower Gunnison and caught a couple of fish that were puking up small crawdads and the jigs were the closest thing I had with me at the time. I started nailing the browns with them and have been using them ever since. Like you, I am now tying my own, but I apparently do not have the same skill level as you guys. I have never caught as many in a day as you report. I could probably benefit greatly from watching you fish for an hour or two. I am continually inspired by your success - keep it up.

Ski - Thx! Anytime! I usually go over to the front range two times a year (Spring/Summer)! I have an extra room if you ever want to fish over here between Spring and Fall? 🎣🤙🍻

Wrmdunker - We don’t always catch big numbers but usually get some decent sized fish! Give me an advanced notice if you want to fish the Gunny/Colorado sometime? The photo below has some of the 3/16 oz Marabou Jigs I tied. The black jig on the far left is what caught most of these fish! If you look in the Rainbows mouth above in the pic you’ll see it.🎣👍

SirGreg - Thx! They’re definitely one of the most effective and easier to deal with lures when spin fishing for Trout! 🎣🍻👊

Thanks for the offer b, I’ll keep it in mind for the spring of 2021.
Maybe by then this 💩 will be more manageable!

bharper,

How do you like to work your jig? I'm terrible at tube and hair jig fishing no matter how hard i try. If you don't feel like sharing on here you can email me at aj[at]coloradofisher.com

I understand if you don't want to share.

FishHuntNow - I work my jig in a popping manner and it depends on the depth of the water as well as the weight of the jig on how fast I pop it with the rod tip up. In shallow faster running water I usually hold the rod tip in a 9 to 11 o’clock position pretty much popping it aggressively like a jerkbait to prevent it from getting snagged! Once you start hooking some or start getting bit you’ll get the feel of it! It took me a few times out to get the feel for it! My friend took me to Spinney in his boat in 2015 and introduced me to throwing jigs! He preceded to land several 3-4 lb Bows while I struggled! The next year in 2016 we went to Spinney where I tried it again and I preceded to get the big fish that day which was a 3 lb Brown! Later that Summer/fall I ended up having my best year of Trout Fishing landing numerous Bows,Browns, and Snake River Cutts in the 3-9 lb range on 1/4 oz Marabou Jigs in Rivers. I usually throw Marabou/Hair Jigs in sizes 1/8,3/16,and 1/4 oz. At Spinney we threw 1/4-3/8oz Jigs from his boat! Hope this helps a little? You shouldn’t have any trouble? I still snag and lose some occasionally.

Thanks a ton for sharing your technique. I will try it and report back. I'm a pretty good learner but this one has been a true challenge, but that is what makes fishing fun.

Sam ties flies now, and we have a good amount of marabou, hopefully can tie some good ones if we can't find any.

Harper, i've noticed the browns really love the jigs.

FishHunt - Yes,the Bows tend to gravitate towards darker colors but the Browns aren’t as selective!

I wonder if it has something to do with the spawning times in Oct/Nov? I went out Sunday and fished the Colorado and didn't do as well with the browns on jerkbaits and they didn't have their colors.
Reply by: bharper      Posted: 12/2/2020 2:16:15 PM     Points: 247
Yeah,I went out Monday and most Browns looked pretty spawned out! I only caught a few on jerkbaits but I mostly fished the Jigs! I landed 20 with only a handful of healthy Browns!

It seems that the Brown spawn happened earlier than in past years in the North Platte in Wyoming. I mostly caught Rainbows that were eating eggs. The water temp was 45 deg F. Did that happen in Colorado also?
Reply by: bharper      Posted: 12/3/2020 10:47:54 AM     Points: 247
Nparker- The spawn is just now starting to fizzle out! There are a few still but it’s pretty much over! A friends wife caught a 3+ lb Bow the other day on the Colorado but they were catching so healthy Browns up til this last week.

The fun just goes on. The browns really vary from river to lake. The Gunnison river browns are done spawning from our last few trips there. But the Blue Mesa browns really vary by strain. The German browns seem to be spawned out but the Scotland browns without the red spots are just barely getting started with tiny egg sacs. So dependent on water temperature and sub species. Many of the Blue Mesa rainbows, maybe half are in full spawn also.

Thanks Harper for the details on how you fish. It sounds like you may get some impulse hit with the fast jerky retrieve. Hand on! I may be fishing the river from a drift boat next week. I use a fly rod and tie my flies. My buddy loves streamer fishing and that has worked on the river along with nymphs. I may try a fast sinking line with a short leader and drop some jig flies between those boulders. Maybe a big Brown will grab one?

Jerry- Thx for your input! The last 3 out of 4 times out on the Gunny was awesome! I appreciate your knowledge!🎣👍🍻

NParker- On the Jigs we’ve been getting more action on Black,Brown, and black/orange,and brown/orange! Good luck! You’ll get ‘em!🎣👊
