Scratched the Itch - Unexpected South Park Ice Fishing

What was suppose to be one last open water trip to get my friend into some brown trout turned into a day of ice fishing! As we arrive in hopes of seeing a open shoreline we were greeted by a capped lake. We almost made a last ditch effort to head to Spinney (which is fishing well) we decide to scout the south shore and to our surprise found 4.5 inch of ice! We stayed really close to shore since the middle of the lake was open.

We decide to proceed drill some holes with safety and caution in mind we fished! The results were unexpected, with me landing a 23 inch MA cuttbow. Enjoy the episode here's the [log in for link]

And always remember ICE IS NEVER SAFE!

Crazy ice there . . . .sounds like the wind was starting to build when you caught that big one.

HP indeed. When I fish early ice I like to be a bit too cautious and drill holes closely until I feel like there is consistency and luckily those two coves on each side of the ramp were solid even with the wind, which was pounding 4 hours before that catch.

I think the main lake will stay open all week with those temps and I'm hoping those coves stay strong to keep building a strong foundation for the rest of the lake. I would NOT recommend people go out just yet.

I see you know how to travel lightly . . .the way that crazy ice like that is made from the wind busting the edge ice and pushing it up is a inside view of how the wind can blow across south park.

I didn't even expect to ice fish, so I brought a tickle stick and we had a ice auger just incase we wanted to go to St. Mary's. we had rope and also our floating suits just because it's cold up there. The ice was a beautiful thing to see.

Yea, didn't expect the fishing to be as ok as it was. Nice way to start the year off. Glad the lake produces healthy fish year in and year out.
