Lake: Hohnholz Lake #1 and #2

Day trip

Took a drive to Hohnholtz Lakes on the 21st.. I hadn't been there in years and needed to get out of town. Conditions were windy and warm, but the fishing was slow. There is water in #1 and several people there had a few caught with fly and bubble. #2 was hurricane-like and very tough to fish. One old guy I talked to had two that he's caught in three hours of fishing. I tried for about an hour with no luck and some wind burn to boot. There was no one on # 3.

#2 completely winter-killed late last winter.

I and several family members were up there in Feb. Punched the first hole, lots of stinky stuff comin' out. Water was like green-pea soup, zero visibility. Fished 2 hours, zero fish.

Son#1 called the CPW, reported what we saw, smelled. CPW sent a biologist up, confirmed what we suspected. Too much snow & ice, all vegetation died, no oxygen, no fish.

The lake has probably been restocked by now, but it will still take a couple of years to really come back.

I have been fishin' that lake for 50+ years, open water and thru the ice. Good lake for kids, grandkids.

Elkskinner-- Very interesting about the die off. Had I known that I might have taken my road trip elsewhere. I wonder if the same happened at #3 as I saw no one there at all. I expect there will be plenty of folks up there trying their luck this weekend, dead lakes or not.
