Fish: Largemouth Bass

First Open Water Bass of 2020

Post By: Team CO.F.F.      Posted: 4/16/2020 1:45:10 PM     Points: 57
Went out with the GF recently and got our first open water largemouth video done for 2020! We had been looking forward to making this for a while, we just have had a very cold spring over here in the mountains…lots of cold fronts.
We hit a reservoir not too far away from where we live and decided to bring the belly boats with us. Chose the wrong day for that as it was REALLY WINDY and it started of course right when we got to the water. It’s a 1/4 mile walk uphill to the reservoir so we got the belly boats out anyway since we hauled them up there.

Didn’t have a thermometer but the water was still pretty cold. Couldn’t have been more then low 50’s/high 40’s…I feel one of the biggest challenges with Colorado bass fishing in the Spring/Fall is the drastic temp changes from high to low. Mixed with a really windy day, can be challenging figuring out what they want to bite.

Figured the chatterbait was a good place to start and it was…3/16oz Chartreuse/white with a 4″ Zako Swimbait Trailer was consistently landing me fish. The reservoir has high columns of vegetation so I was slow rolling with slight pops around that. Also caught a fish that digested a worm hook, hook end stuck in his anus, felt bad for it…

Hope you guys enjoy the video! Got some good drone shots of the area, our first drone shots for a bass video ever for the channel! If pictures are more your thing, attached are some photos of the day!!

Thanks Rogbow! It was a really fun time out there despite having soar legs from battling the wind...guess you could say it was a good sore!

Those are decent looking bass! I'm yet to reel in my first o' the year but I've spooked several from the shoreline. Hoping with the cold weather moving out and a week or two with temps not dipping below freezing overnight, the bass fishing will be FIRE!

Thanks, usually I would expect stronger fights out of these sizes but the water was a lot colder then I thought it would be...I even commented in my video that the bass were really cold. The cold fronts every few weeks definitely has made the bite weird but it seems to be getting warmer overall over here on the Western Slope. Going for Smallmouth and Largemouth Monday, hoping for some good results. I think the Ned Rig will be good. Good luck out there man!!
