Annual Spring Hike to Lefthand Res

Post By: MOJO      Posted: 2/21/2020 8:29:53 AM     Points: 507
I'm Mike, the Lake Skipper for Lefthand Reservoir, which is between Nederland and Estes Park on Hi 7. I thought I'd put out a note to see if anyone would like to join our annual Spring hike up to Lefthand Reservoir, which will happen in mid May depending on the snowpack. It's a 2 mile jaunt in with some drifts to hike over but the brookies and the views are well worth it. I'll give another shout as the date approaches. Cheers, all.

Id be up for that hike.

Also, apologies for the dumb question, but what exactly is a Lake Skipper?

I haven't been there in years! Is the 4x4 road closed with strictly walk in access now?

Yep closed. Don't even think about that lake on windy days. I've made the hike three times and have only been able fish for about 1/2" because of the wind conditions. Would be sweet if you could take a sled up there.

When it's howling in the Winter, it's extremely inhospitable. Very hard to start a fire. We saw evidence of a blowdown just S of there on the Rainbow Lakes road with the downed trees lying in one direction. Here are some pix I placed at the FxR side.

Ive been fishing the front range for a few years now, but Ive been under the impression that Left Hand Reservoir is not open to the public (based on how its marked on the maps)

This is the Left Hand Res thats south of Brainard Lake, right?

Yes, just S of Brainard. You might be confusing it with the 4 Lakes watershed area, off of the Rainbow Lakes Rd, more S, which is closed to the public.
