Fish too big for the hole

Post By: tfotrout      Posted: 12/10/2019 12:03:59 PM     Points: 1387
Anyone ever had this happen? I got a new 6 Inch auger downsized from an 8. I have only been ice fishing for a couple years and have hooked 2 fish by chance that i could barely get though an 8 inch hole. Kinda has me worried about the same thing happening with a smaller hole..thoughts?

I would not fish lake trout with anything less than an 8in hole. Everything else in Colorado will fit though a 6. If you already have an 8 i'de stick to the 8. Don't take up much more space or weight.

I agree with Goose. As the old saying goes, "why take chances when you can avoid the situation?" I've had quite a few bonking their heads on the ice while getting them in, even with an 8" hole.

Ive caught some fat ass brookies that wouldn't fit through a 6 inch hole.

I can only wish to have that problem. Until that day....

Are you guys pulling out fish side ways?

As goosehunter said..I would never use 6 for lakers..Ive definitely iced some lakers that wouldnt fit thru a 6..id imagine 6 being good for most other scenarios

Iíve been using a 6 inch auger for quite a few years now. Had a few that barely fit. If youíre chasing lakers regularly, then go back to the 8.

You can always buy a kdrill. You will be able to open your hole wider if you need to. 😎🐟

Kithme, this fatty was a bit over 6" from top of body to bottom and she had her way even with an 8" hole!

6" isn't big enough for pike either. Fortunately, Colorado grows pike big and fat!

MOJO- that is pretty.

Iím still waiting to have that problem.

Gotta feel blessed when your worried about not having a big enough ice hole for your fish to come thru.

Lost big rainbow, same diameter as my 7" auger, was really tight, at Wolford.

Every year I've witnessed guys fishing for Lakers with a six inch hole and have witnessed the devastation one goes thru when they realize that the fish will not fit thru the hole. I've drilled holes with my 8" auger next to the 6"hole and it never ends well. Dont be that guy. After trying to help guys out I've come to the conclusion that some lessons have to be learned the hard way!

I went chasing lakers with a buddy who just got a new 6" k drill. We were targetting eaters so I didn't think much of it. Until I hooked into a 35" on my UL with 4# line. We ended up double drilling the hole in order to get it through. Never again will I chase lakers with a 6".

For those very reasons, Santa is bringing me an Ion 8 inch IF I am a good boy the next two weeks! Have not had a big enough fish to not fit through the 6 inch, but do not want to wait until too late! Come on Santa!

Good input and stories. Looks like the 8 will stay when looking for bigger fish. These are the two that came looking for trout.
