Lake: Sanchez Reservoir

Sanchez Situation

Today the lake is setting up nicely. Seems we need a bit more cold weather to make it safe. I don't think it is there yet so urge caution and ice it at your own risk. here are some pics.

I am optimistic about this lake. Last years perch should be fun, and there are catfish and nice brown trout in there. Walleyes will take a few more years.

Pike are probably in there. If anyone catches one, let me know.

Hey Johnski - a couple months ago the biologist with DOW offered to let me help with his survey nets at Sanchez. Unfortunately I was unable to go, but he did follow up with me and reported the following: a couple very large walleyes that must of survived the drain down, along with some really nice catfish and a very large abundance of carp. He was disappointed with no perch that they had planted and in his words "we have a carp problem". Not sure what the fix is for the future, but hopefully they figure it out and we get it back to it's glory days!
Btw - he said they didn't net a single pike, but that was expected due to the fact that the pike are good at avoiding the nets. my hope is they drop some Tiger Muskie in there to eat out some of the carp and keep from reproducing. But either way, I'd love for the walleye to rebound and the brown population to come back.

Btw - we really should get together and hit the ice this year?

Hey Chodeman….let's do. I just got back from Smith this morning and had a good day there. I live in Monte Vista and you? You can email me at and we can set something up.

I was thrilled to read your report. WOW. Some walleyes DID survive the draw down!!! That alone is worth the drive. But the mystery of what happened to the perch has me wondering. And pike? Just last year I landed a couple of 16-18 inch browns, so there are some in there too.

Too many carp....I wonder if we changed the regs and allowed bowfishing, whether that would eliminate some of the carp. Did a lot of that in my younger days and I know many who would jump at the opportunity.
