When does Jackson freeze up ?

Post By: cardo      Posted: 11/7/2019 5:56:53 PM     Points: 788
I want to do lots of ice fishing over Christmas vacation but don't like thin ice. When is Jackson usually safe to walk on ?

Solid ice on the plains lake can be tricky. Some winters it doesn't
even happen.
The best time is the dead of winter. Late December/January.

Cross your fingers

I believe itís at least January most years. Last year everything didnít really lock up until January and even after that it never really was safe. I was on prewitt in the beginning of February last year on 4 inches of ice.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like Christmas is too early. I want to catch some walleye but Colorado doesnít seem to be the place to do it through the ice.

Have to go to the mountains for any ice right now. The lower elevations donít usually get good ice until January ish. You might start a new post asking this question. Probably get better results.

Depends on where you are willing to travel cardo. Gotta work for those eyes. I usually do my best for walleye through the ice. I would just see what lakes you are willing to go to, but there are a lot that you can do well.

I'm staring out the window at Barr right now. It's capped but it looks sketchy. I'd imagined Jackson's probably similarly situated.

Ya. That's AJ fishing over by the south side of the boat ramp. I've fished the same ice as him the past couple of years and will say we fish ice that I wouldn't suggest others fish. Not to say in wouldn't fish it for sure but it's probably not the quality of ice most people are looking for or prepared to be on. Looks to be about 2 inches or so in his video.
