River: Roaring Fork River - Middle

Fishing RF in Glenwood Springs this weekend

Post By: FishingJunkie      Posted: 6/24/2019 1:05:33 PM     Points: 1834
Heading out to do some camping in Glenwood Springs this Friday, Sat and Sunday. If the river is not blown out with the run-off I'd like to fish it. Looking for some suggestions on 3 or 4 fly patterns to use. My goto setup is typically Dry and Drop, but I can nymph also. What should I be tossing there this time of year?

The Roaring Fork is ripping right now. You can still catch fish if you find "slow" shallow water. Princes and other flashy bead heads are really good during high run off on the fork.

Wadding might not be safe, the run off is going crazy.

Maybe San Juan worm with a prince nymph 2nd fished in the pockets/eddies near shore (if safely accessible). If it's flowing like mad, I'm not gonna risk it.

Probably too blown out to fish. If you're desperate, nymph with two rubberlegs in slack water, or try big articulated streamers like a sparkle minnow or sex dungeon. White, yellow, and black are good colors to try.

High runoff will be lasting a really long time this yr even if we dont get rain.

I've fished high water before, with good results in slow pockets close to the shore, provided the water is accessible. If it's overflowing the banks and is generally unsafe, I wont even try. We'll see.

The Pan has fishable water right now.

Nice, what flies would work there? Sizes?
