River: Yampa River - Steamboat Springs

Yampa through Steamboat

Post By: mike2_72      Posted: 5/14/2019 5:37:15 PM     Points: 83
I am heading to Steamboat this weekend and am thinking of hitting up the Yampa in and around Steamboat for a few hours in the morning one day. I am going to be spin fishing and was planning on throwing rapalas or small spinners. Any good suggestions on where to park? Should I go before town? Through town or after town? Figured I would park at Fetcher park and just walk the bike path until I find a good spot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Honestly the river is very chocolate and fast, not the best time for fishing up here. After run off any where thru town is good fishing. Would try darker colors, with rapalas with rattles or spinners , while fishing eddies and sides of rifts. If you can beat the crowds and have time, clearest water would be tail waters of steamboat lake.

I was worried it would be high and chocolate milk this time of year. Thanks for the info. I will throw the rod in and see if I decide to fish one of the near by lakes or give the river a shot just because.

I love hitting the bridge area near downtown. I've killed it with fl org ZRay lures in that area. Same color Panther Martins in size 4 do well also.

It'll be high and fast in town, some visibility so lures may work but landing any good size ones will be a challenge. Below Stagecoach will be awesome, except for the crowds, and it's flies and lures only down there, try throwing barbless jigs into the turbulent jet valve right up at the spillway. Lunkers in there. Have fun
