Caught this fat little gal ready for her nest, looks like the spot/smallie hybrid with the "bronze" color and dark spots along the back. I could be wrong but never the less the spotted bass record is waiting to be broken!
I would be very surprised if this WAS a mean mouth bass, from the reports I've read from the MInnesota DNR it would NEVEr (strong word, of course) occur in the wild, and the fish would be so aggressive that they would chomp at any lure of ANY kind that would come their way. Not sure it would've survived in the wild long enough to have made it that big. Out of curiosity, where did you catch that? Somewhere down South I'm guessing if she's already to spawn? Plus, isn't the mean mouth bass a sterile hybrid?
I think im wrong now that I look at past photos, the one pictured here caught 2 years ago looks more like a smallie/spot mix, the one pictured above was caught this week. However like mentioned the spotted bass record is out there. Yes these fish were caught in southern Colorado.
Ya those do look more like Spotted Bass to me, though Iíve never caught one myself. I would just have a hard time believing that there would be enough mean mouth hybrids out there in southern Colorado that occurred naturally to have caught more than one. Call me a cynic. Lol
Not sure how accurate this is, but..... seems like itís at least possible if spotted bass and smallmouth coexist in southern Colorado. My info was based on a Largemouth/smallmouth hybrid. [log in for link]
