Why Ice Weirdos have teeny tiny rods

Post By: anglerwannabe      Posted: 2/5/2019 1:25:25 PM     Points: 44858
No, not the ones in their trousers, altho with all the ice time those are probably innies instead of outies at this point. I'm talking about their fishing rods and reels. People tease me cuz I got some pricey gear.. BUT I ain't got nothin on any ice weirdo.. check this out. In order to ice fish.. you need

Ion Auger
Big Ice Hut
little ice scoop
tungstun jig heads NOT cheap lead ones
Sled to haul your stuff
Truck to get your stuff to lake
Snowmobile to pull your stuff on the sled onto ice
4 Wheeler to pull your stuff on the sled onto ice
Maybe 4 weheeler AND snowmobile
Trailer for truck to pull snowmobile\4 wheeler
really good boots
cleats for boots
serious good cold weather gear
vexilar or some sort of fish finder
under water camera
heater for ice hut
stove to cook on ice (frigid-i-hole comes to mind)
friends
food and booze to convince friends to go on ice
and lets not get started on the Northern Ice Weirdos with their houses on ice

WHEW after ALL that, no wonder Ice Weirdos can't afford full size rods and reels!

LOL

You missed the best one AWB. On In-Fisherman TV they showed a rig that you can drive to your spot, Secure it with automatic jacks (like a crane ) , drill your hole through the holes in the floor and fish without ever stepping outside ! Conservative est $60.000 !

And all that stuff at the cost of one of your rod and reel set ups and 2 lures! LOL.

I'm guilty of about 1/2 the things you listed.

We get it.

You have problems with ICE Holes!!!!

At times I (others too) have problems with them too. I (we) spend all day jigging in those dam ICE holes and they donít put out. Stupid ice holes!!!! I feel like I should treat them like my ex grirlfried. If they donít put out on the first date I should move on.

About the rods. Just remember, ďitís not the size, itís how you use it!Ē

The gear maybe a little pricey but you have a chance to show off how crazy you are.

Come on who says you cant walk on water.

My mini tenkara rod starts out at 6 inches but grows to 8 feet! seriously, this is why I love open water fishing ) my favorite time of year is late summer when the small creeks are low and I can go out with super minimal gear and slam trout all day:

no waders
lanyard with clippers and forcep
one small fly box
one spool tippet
sling pack with snacks and filter bottle

that's it! gotta love it

Honestly though you can totally get away with a hand crank $50 auger and normal spin casting rods....thats how I spent my first 2 years ice fishing and we did very well! We left with limits multiple times

Granted I do now have a nice hut, sonar, ion x auger......but they are not necessities to be successful! They just make everything more comfortable
