Decent Day at Blue Mesa

I met SGM at the Elk Creek ramp at 6:45 on Thursday. We started straight out from the boat docks, punched about 8 holes in 40 fow. Didn’t take to long to get 3 browns on top, about 14-15”, but not the lakers we wanted to target early. We went 100’ farther out but the water was still only 42’ deep. Ice is safe at 5 to 8” there. Caught a few more of all 3 species including a few small lakers on tubes with either perch meat or sucker meat. Went another 100’ south and finally found 57 to 60 fow. We hunkered down and stayed in that area till 4. Lost some nicer lakers right off from a broken leader and a broken knot on the hook set. Typical bite with flurries and dead spots mixed in. The brown and lakers were fairly active early and late like normal on a sunny day. What we hoped would be kokes suspended at 17’ turned out to be rainbows. End the day with 51 total, with 10 lakers from 15” to 19” and about an equal mix of browns and rainbows. Mostly white tube jigs but had several of each species on spoons also. Nice day there without wind and typical wisecracks flying most of the day. About 7 other vehicles and maybe 20 other fishermen all day. The highlite was the royal ceremony of Russ being knighted with the Slimer Belt which I had the pleasure of wearing the last few months. Overall another great trip to BM despite its sad water level. Yep Now to get the smoker ready for those lakers/browns!

It was a great day on the ice to me. And I proudly accept the slimer king award this round. Lost a few nice browns right at the hole but that is fishing. Looking forward to the next trip already.

Chucker, we will get you out as soon as possible.

Sounds like a good day! You guys did well! A friend and myself ice fished Elk Creek Friday! We went east of the boat ramp around the corner and fished the wall just east of the floating dock(store)! I think we fished in 40-60 foot of water? My friend fished the same area two times this past week before we went! I think he went Tuesday and Wednesday? He did well like you guys but he caught a few Kokes each trip! Here’s a couple of the Kokes he caught. We didn’t do real well yesterday only landing 26 which included 2 Lakers(one 20”),4-5 Bows, and the rest Browns. It was my first time and I had a pretty good time!

Russ, we may have to wrestle for the slimer belt. I pounded them last week.

Nice catch Brian, good smoker kokes.

Lynn we will just have to do a fish off and see who keeps the belt. Never know Jerry could take it back.
