No Slimers Were Harmed

So SGM and I hit Miramonte on Saturday, East Portal and Pine Creek on the Gunny Sunday, and the lower Gunny at the Gunnison Forks this morning. A fantastic time was had by alll.(except the fish)
We were extremely lucky as the forecast all 3 days was 50% or more for rain, at my house during those days we got 1.5”. Where we were fishing mostly sprinkles. Maybe a quarter this morning the last two hours.
Miramonte was its steady self and we landed 50 fish together of four species. The cutts and browns ran 14” to 16”, most of the rainbows 15” to 17”, the cutbows from 16” to 19”. Mostly caught on jigs in green, brown and white. Mostly football fish, especially at 17” and over. The fall colors over Dallas divide were spectacular.
Next day we hit the Portal till 1:00, only caught 13 there, tough bite but they were beautifully colored. Same jigs as the day before. Then over to Pine Creek trail just below Blue Mesa Dam. Hot right away, with 6 browns and a bow in the first 20 minutes. Then a 30 mph wind came up, making it impossible to keep our jigs down. Browns ran 17” to 18”. We headed out.
This morning we got to the river at Pleasure Park at 6:30, misty, but no rain till 11. Played Run and Gun and went two miles up. Same 3 colors of jigs as two previous days. 61 fish to net, lots more lost half way in. The browns averaged 15”, but quite a few. 16” to 18”. Coming out was a pain on the slick, muddy trail, but we got out in the rain and back across the North Fork in the rain. Pictures coming, I can only send one at a time, so Russ will send some also. Stunning colors on all the river fish now. Thanks to Russ for all the good times and many belly laughs. The two wives did a color trip south of Ridgway and got some Girl Time. Oustanding vittles, we just had Russ n Karen’s elk burgers for a late lunch. First pic a nice bow n cutbow from Miramonte. We kept our 8 from there, but only one river fish with a torn gill.

Now THAT is a lot of trouts! Good times!

As for the title of your post, though, kinda leaves me scratching my head?!?

Couple more pics from East Portal below the BC National Park.

WTG Jerry and Russ! Great to see you guys had three good days and a good report! That pic with Russ is where my friend and I have lost the biggest Bows we’ve ever had on there! My friends line broke and the fish I had on broke my treble driving up current like a Salmon in the shallow water!!! The Bows are growing fast and starting to dominate for us at least, especially for my friend with his 1/16-1/8 oz black Crappie Jig! I almost went today but I’m probably going to go to the lower Canyon tomorrow and looking forward to going back to Pine Creek! Hope to see you out there someday!🎣👍🍻

The title refers to my penchant for catching stocker rainbows in places we usually only catch bigger ones, like my 12” slimer at Antero last week. We didn’t catch a single one in the last 3 days although Russ caught a brown that was sub-slimer size!

Well done guys! I bet that trip was pretty epic. The fish have great colors to them.

Sounds like a great time! I hit the canyon on a solo trip Sunday morning and it did not disappoint! Only fished for a few hours, but lost count of how many I caught.
Been wanting to get up to Miramonte - looks like you guys did very well

Can you launch at Miramonte?

Was a great fishing trip with Diggins and always nice to spend time wit him and his wife. However I think I need a week for my knees to recover from the rock climbing in the canyon. For sure we lucked out with the weather and as Jerry said the autumn colors where fantastic for both the fish and the leaves. The slick mud was a pain and painful both in the body and pocket. We both did a couple of nice slip and fall moves with me breaking the reel to rod foot off and Jerry breaking his net. Of course there is always a nice rock waiting to great your leg and or back when you fall.

Even with the few issues it was a great time and looking forward to the next time. Not sure if that makes us crazy or just die-hards.

As for that monster 6 inch brown, it takes more skill to catch one that size!

One more

Pathway, we saw 2 small boats on the water so yes you can still launch.

YD, glad you got out and into a few. Hope we can catch up and hit it together soon.

BHarper, thanks, someday we will hook up and hit the water. Bad pun intended.

Lynn,,

Both boat ramps are out of water. A couple hand carry boats put out Saturday at the first boat ramp to the sides.

Brad,

Looks like you had a good day also. We lost several each that would have exceeded 20”, but they would throw the jig as they cleared the water by five feet. So browns don’t jump? Lol.

Sorry my bad, I should have said you can launch small boats but not a boat on a trailer.

Thanks, everyone, was a good long weekend. Coach, I put that title there just to hear what you always say about me being the 🤴, Lol.
