So SGM and I hit Miramonte on Saturday, East Portal and Pine Creek on the Gunny Sunday, and the lower Gunny at the Gunnison Forks this morning. A fantastic time was had by alll.(except the fish)
We were extremely lucky as the forecast all 3 days was 50% or more for rain, at my house during those days we got 1.5”. Where we were fishing mostly sprinkles. Maybe a quarter this morning the last two hours.
Miramonte was its steady self and we landed 50 fish together of four species. The cutts and browns ran 14” to 16”, most of the rainbows 15” to 17”, the cutbows from 16” to 19”. Mostly caught on jigs in green, brown and white. Mostly football fish, especially at 17” and over. The fall colors over Dallas divide were spectacular.
Next day we hit the Portal till 1:00, only caught 13 there, tough bite but they were beautifully colored. Same jigs as the day before. Then over to Pine Creek trail just below Blue Mesa Dam. Hot right away, with 6 browns and a bow in the first 20 minutes. Then a 30 mph wind came up, making it impossible to keep our jigs down. Browns ran 17” to 18”. We headed out.
This morning we got to the river at Pleasure Park at 6:30, misty, but no rain till 11. Played Run and Gun and went two miles up. Same 3 colors of jigs as two previous days. 61 fish to net, lots more lost half way in. The browns averaged 15”, but quite a few. 16” to 18”. Coming out was a pain on the slick, muddy trail, but we got out in the rain and back across the North Fork in the rain. Pictures coming, I can only send one at a time, so Russ will send some also. Stunning colors on all the river fish now. Thanks to Russ for all the good times and many belly laughs. The two wives did a color trip south of Ridgway and got some Girl Time. Oustanding vittles, we just had Russ n Karen’s elk burgers for a late lunch. First pic a nice bow n cutbow from Miramonte. We kept our 8 from there, but only one river fish with a torn gill.
