Pike slow, crappie action hot

My wife and I got up to Elkhead for the first time this year with a buddy and his wife. Neither of them ever caught a pike so the game plan was to get them their first pike and clear that off the bucket list. I am happy to report that we accomplished our goal. They did not get any monsters but they each got a few in the low to mid 20's range. Overall pike fishing was slow so we decided to chase the crappies too. The crappie bite was hot as we caught well over 150 fish between all of us. lots of 7 to 10 inch fish but plenty in the 9 to 11 inch range to bring home a limit each of tasty filets. Small 2 inch twister tail grubs did the job in just about any color we threw. I guess luck was on my side as I ended up with the largest pike of the trip at 34 inches and the largest crappie at 12.5. We tried for bass but could not get any to hit not even the usual 6-8 inch little guys. Was great to get out with our friends and my son who lives in Craig met us in his boat too.

The best pike of the trip.

Wicked, lots of fun. Some big crappies in the lake if you can get thru the smaller ones. Plan to loose some jigs to both trees/bushes and pike bite offs.

Another great Elkhead trip! Looking forward to getting there next year with the crew! The crappie alone would make the trip. Pike n bass are the bonus. What the difference was imo was nearly 800 pike taken out in the so-called tourney aka trophy fish slaughter.

Thanks guys.

AWB, what you never heard of the pike crappie? It is a sub- spices like the white and black.

Bharper, Sept thru Nov can be good as they strap on the feed bag for winter.

Diggins, don't get me started. Pike fishing and SMB fishing has gone to CRAP since the so called tourneys and possible/probable other actions by CPW. As for the crappies it will be great to get you and the Mrs. out and into a pile of good eating.
