My wife and I got up to Elkhead for the first time this year with a buddy and his wife. Neither of them ever caught a pike so the game plan was to get them their first pike and clear that off the bucket list. I am happy to report that we accomplished our goal. They did not get any monsters but they each got a few in the low to mid 20's range. Overall pike fishing was slow so we decided to chase the crappies too. The crappie bite was hot as we caught well over 150 fish between all of us. lots of 7 to 10 inch fish but plenty in the 9 to 11 inch range to bring home a limit each of tasty filets. Small 2 inch twister tail grubs did the job in just about any color we threw. I guess luck was on my side as I ended up with the largest pike of the trip at 34 inches and the largest crappie at 12.5. We tried for bass but could not get any to hit not even the usual 6-8 inch little guys. Was great to get out with our friends and my son who lives in Craig met us in his boat too.
