I go to school down in Durango and I would highly recommend checking out either Duranglers or the San Juan Angler. I haven't guided with them, but they have gave me lots of useful information and have helped me get on fish when I was just starting out.
If you didn't want to get a guide, a little research on the river and some simple patterns such as annelids, san juan worms, egg patterns, zebra midges, and leech patterns is all you will need to catch some fish.
Keep the patterns small and the tippet light. My buddies and I only use 4x-6x when we fish there. I'd recommend checking out the New Zealand style strike indicators when fishing there as they are much more sensitive and won't spook the fish when landing on the water.
I agree with San Juan Anglers one of my friends praises them. Just be warned there is a very large fire (416 Fire) down there so I don't know how the fishing down there will be till it gets contained. Hope This Helps,
