Coordinating Officials and Ice Fishing Anglers,
The Monument Lake ice conditions have become a safety problem again this year. Last week there was a clear hard ice about 8 inches thick. I went down on the lake on January 12 and the ice is now around 4 to 6 inches. Not enough to sustain a large number of fisherman with open water in the northwest corner. The wind that came up ‘dark’ early on the morning of the 12th to further open the northwest corner by another 30 feet, pushing ice on the ice pack ridge. On Thursday I was communicating with Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologist, hatchery stocking, Tri-Lakes Fire Department and notified Monument Town Public Works Director, noting that safety is our first-priority. The weather forecast does not indicate any hard freezing to rectify the ice melted.
I/we have chosen to officially cancel the tournament effective immediately. I will park at the lake entrance with a cancelled sign until 9:00 am on Saturday, January 20 for those that have not received the notice. Anyone that decides to ice fish will warned and fish at their own risk.
Thank you for supporting the active duty rehabilitating wounded warriors and gold star families at Fort Carson. We will hope that January 2019 will be a good hard ice tournament.
