shrimp as bait

Post By: mackman16      Posted: 12/6/2017 11:09:27 AM     Points: 322
I stopped by King Soopers to get the Kroger brand cooked salad shrimp I have used in previous years for ice fishing for trout. And it looks like King Soopers no longer carries that size package and the salad-size cook shrimp they do have is packaged different. So I am wondering, for those that use shrimp as ice fishing bait, what brand and place to purchase do you prefer? And cooked or raw?

I use the ones they sell at cabelas. The come in a cardboard box. There good size but I just keep them frozen and cut them up.

Use RAW shrimp (frozen), not cooked shrimp. Cut it up while it is still frozen.

I use raw shrimp from what ever store I am at when I buy it.

I usually by raw shimp at the fish counter as I need them...3 or 4 at a time. Maybe Iím just ďanalĒ about it, but I believe fresher is better.

The nice woman at Kings Soopers fish counter gives me the funnyest look when I ask for 5 shrimp . . . .so I told her what I'm up to. She laughed!
BTW . . . .ask if the shrimp are fresh, never frozen vrs. fresh frozen, but thawed. The fresh are better and the store might only have fresh from frozen.
Do your homework on this one.

Same here, I go to Sprouts in Littletown, Buy 2 fresh raw shrimp, usually less than a buck, if I donít use em up, down the hole they go. No use in freezing .25 worth when I get home. So, always fresh, always raw, never frozed has been my go to. See yíall Sunday at Antero

I use frozen raw shrimp. Only because I don't want to stop at the store in the mornings on my way out to get one or two. I buy a bag of frozen, put them in a ziplock bag in the freezer and take 2 or 3 out with me each time I go out. The one bag lasts me most of the season. I fished with a buddy of mine at the Snake on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. He used precooked cocktail shrimp and I used raw. I out fished him 2:1. Now I can't say that it was only due to the bait as it could have also been presentation but we were both close to each other and fishing similar lures, both actively jigging and dead sticking.

Huh, I guess I always used the frozen pre-cooked because that is what I learned to use and it seemed convenient to leave the expected unused portion at home in the freezer. Before this thread, I never thought much about raw shrimp. I like the salad size because they are just about the right size and shape of a size 8 or size 6 hook. I think the trout like the way the tail of the shrimp curls around the hook, it almost looks like the body to the ice jig. When using raw shrimp, or I guess anything larger than salad size and buying 3-5 shrimp, I suppose you just cut them and use a chunk about the size or a lima bean?

I just used the jumbo ones you get 4 to 6 pieces out of one shrimp
Don't like to use the tail just like don't use the head of the sucker for Lakers.
Messes with the hook set
That just me

When I'm using raw shrimp, I just slice off a thin piece and hook it onto my hook. Sometimes, I will take that piece and cut it in half when I'm using micro jigs.

It doesnít take much, I pinch off pencil eraser size chunk, put on jig-lure of choice and drop it down the hole. I love dead sticking jig n shrimp
