Need help catching Redears

Can anyone give me some tips on catching redears, I've tried before with no luck and would like some helpful tips on what to use or special techniques.

1) Fly rod with a nymph and strike indicator*
2) Ice fishing jig under a bobber*
3) Tiny piece of crawler on a salmon egg hook under a bobber
4) Tiny piece of slim jim (not kidding)
5) Gulp maggots

*Tipping with a tiny piece of protein seems to help.

Also, time of day is everything. For example, bluegills, redears other sunfish tend to come in shallow around sunset and are very active for 30 minutes to an hour. I find the muddier the water, the more active they become. These fish are easy pickings for birds and bigger fish, so think "survive first, eat second".

When looking for any species, know finding is half of catching. To that end keep in mind redears other name, shell crackers. Redears have a liking for snails and other such fare.

Yeah I've heard that about redears but is their any special rig I should use it seems like they feed towards the bottom. Also thanks Bizkits for the tip on time of day.
