Lake: Big Creek Lake(lower)

Big Creek Lakes- fish kill from fire

Post By: BDF_Beats_GDW      Posted: 7/3/2017 6:18:37 PM     Points: 2841
Anyone been fishing or camping to big creeks? I have a camping spot reserved for august. I was wondering if the fire run off was going to kill the lake or not?

Your good, ice fished it and didn't notice a difference from previous years.
I personally haven't made the trip since ice off, but a friend was up a while ago and said they did well. Mainly stocker bows but managed a couple macs.

The burn took a number on the scenery for sure. It's a new kind of beauty now and hopefully more kids will be able to see green trees at big creek like I grew up seeing there.

Has anyone been out since runoff started running heavy?

We were at lower a couple days ago for the first time, trolling. Fished the deep side of the lake. Tried the shallower areas and found water plants so concentrated on the deep side. Caught a couple lakers and no rainbows. Slow bite for us. Heard report of a large Muskie being caught and lost at net. Liked the area an great place to beat the Denver heat. Hit John on the way home, it was very active.

The lake itself is still fine. I hit it a few weeks ago, and got into brookies, lakers, and bows. It definitely got pretty scorched up there though. The trail to the upper lake is closed as well, so unless you have a boat, you cant really get up there.

How bad is the scenery around the campground?

The campground is ok, but the trail from campground to upper lake is closed as well as the horse trailer parking area.
