River: Big Thompson River - Canyon

Big Thompson River Opinion

Post By: Jimmy Ice      Posted: 2/1/2017 1:14:19 PM     Points: 538
As someone that avidly fishes Big Thompson river throughout the year I've noticed it's been much improved since the floods most notably this past year. Some opinions are it's been ruined and not made any kind of recovery. I feel like it's definitely on the right track and even better than Clear Creek and Bear Creek.

Just wondering what you guys think?

I hear the sections below drake are improved, and there is a good number of fish coming back to the river.

I still concentrate on fishing above Drake whenever I do fish that area, and it seems to be as good as ever in those stretches, although it is likely seeing an increase in pressure from people with the same idea.

The stretches in Loveland still seem sub par though. There are still lots of trout, but it seems like the numbers of fish bigger than 10" have declined some. They're still there, but fewer and farther between in my personal experience.

Agreed. I don't even fish these river after the Canyon when it goes into loveland, I only fish starting at Canyon and most of the time above drake.

Is there even a way to access the upper canyon right now? I was under the impression that the road is closed to anyone other than residents from a few miles past the dam store up to Estes for construction? Interested to see what effect the new wave of construction has had on the river.

They opened it up for a bit until Jan 7th and I was able to check it out a few times but it's back to being limited to residents. There's still a good 2 miles of fishing through the Canyon before it's closed, just not the best pools to fish. The construction has made the water a little murky and makes for some challenging fishing. I'm hoping it'll be back to normal by mid year. Got to love when the rivers health and fishing is not a priority. Sad.
