Arkansas River above Canon City

Fished with the family today above Canon City between Five Points and Cedar Gulch. We had some bites on salmon eggs. In case the spawn was happening, tried to target areas below spawning beds with salmon eggs, in hopes of downriver 'bows or any kind of trout slurping some down outside the zone where the browns spawn. Read something this week about this, but I think maybe I missed the spawn, what with the weirdly unusual warm weather. (I've still got a functioning vegetable garden outdoors in November!) Or maybe I didn't read the water right. Only got a few bites. Got some bumps on kasties, and followers and bumps on red & white Daredevls, in deeper slots and holes. Great looking water with flow at 440 cfm, and don't know the temp. Clarity was 3 feet, and according to my non-colorblind peeps, the color was slate gray. Saw fly anglers at some turnouts, but overall plenty of space available. Overcast and chilly with light breeze until noon, then nearing 60 degrees with bright sun and moderate breeze blowing downriver until we left at 3:00pm. (Modified report also in River Update)

Still sounds like a good day. Very few rainbows in that stretch of the river but lots of browns. Next time take along some 1/8 OZ white maribou jigs and give them a try. They have not failed me yet.

Thank you for the report. I'm going to give Arkansas river below Pueblo Reservoir a chance see how it's fishing.
