Poudre and Big T

Post By: FlyLady      Posted: 9/29/2016 1:10:11 PM     Points: 1433
Hi fellas!

I haven't gone fishing to the Poudre and Big Thompson in years, the last time I was near Big Thompson was in 2009 and didn't fly fish at that time, used a spinner. After the floods I heard fishing was somewhat decent. Has it improved and is it even worth making the trip?

I know Poudre is doing well so I'm going to attempt to fish it near Ft. Collins.

The lower half of the Big T got hurt pretty bad with the flood. I know I heard more than once that the area below Drake was essentially sterile, but there may be some fish returning by now. Of course, when the road closes next month and construction starts again, it'll probably suffer some more damage before it gets better. The area up by Estes still fishes well.

The Poudre isn't as bad, and there are still fish to be found from town all the way up to the pass.

My advice would be, take the path less traveled and find areas that are not close to a parking area. Those spots get pounded on a daily basis.

If you fish the Big Thompson, make sure you go higher up in the canyon. Anything above Drake should still be ok. The floods did a number on the lower stretches, and there was a fish kill earlier this year from Drake down to the water treatment facility in Loveland that killed a large percentage of the fish still there. The upper stretches still fish very well though.

The Poudre is fishing well. I spent last Saturday fishing the Poudre in the canyon and caught good numbers of decent fish. Juju Baetis were the hot ticket.

Good Luck.

Hey Guys!

I was able to make it out to Big Thompson yesterday, fished it at the start of the Canyon, the first area you can park and walked down to attempt catching something and actually got into a brown on a black RS2 fly . Than headed towards Drake, about 3 miles before Drake and got into a couple of rainbows. Not bad, it's definitely not where it use to be but I think fishing was it's getting better. :)
