Did some fly-fishing this evening at Brainard Lake. The fish were hitting like crazy. I miss one and hook another. Had a GREAT time and below is 1 of the 15 I caught and released tonight. All ran between 8' to 13'.

8'-13' brookies no thanks they scare the hell outta me. Any brookie over 2' I will pass cause they got the mind set of a bulldog and will attack any thing lol. Sounds like a fun day.

Hard not to enjoy Brainard. Even if you don't catch fish the scenery is awesome. Boulder ranger web still shows the road closed.
Did you walk in?

Were is that lake looks like great place to teach my daughter how to use a fly and bubble my wife is starting to fish as well. Looking for a lake that has decent brooks in it to.

That sounds like a great day!!

Come on elk...you know you'd love to tangle with an 8 foot brookie on your ultralight set up!

Hummm....I posted late last night, that was 8" to 13" :-) The road to Brainard Lake was opened June 18th. The road to Lefthand Res., Long Lake and Mitchell Lake trailheads are still close. The campground is still closed too. Brainard Lake is near Ward, north of Nederland off "Peak to Peak" highway. There is an entry fee I believe of $10, but they do except "America the Beautiful" cards and several other national recreation cards. Yes it is a beautiful area! Several lakes in the area that offer fishing for Brook, Rainbow, Cutthroat and Splake ( Splake in Lefthand Res. only). Great place to see wildlife, specially Moose. My parents took me on my first camping trip there when I was 2 months old, that was 63 years ago this July 4th weekend!

You almost need a float tube or canoe up there. The lake is very shallow and it is very hard to reach the fish from shore.

To Hunter Creek, I caught all from shore. In fact I caught some of the largest less than 20 ft. from shore. Went back up there this evening (06/19/16) with the fly-rod. Caught and released 22 tonight. Below is one I caught tonight. And thank you CATCHEM ALL.

It is beautiful up there. I usually try to make a few trips up there a year. You should walk up to long lake. It Holds bigger fish and the views are gorgeous. From the Brainard lake parking lot probably about 15-20 min walk

Good for you, Moose Dancer. I've never done well from shore up there but you've proven it can be done.

mike2_72 I fish Long Lake often too. I did well at Long Lake last fall and seen some very nice brook spawning there. Also encountered a mountain lion at Long Lake last fall! Below is a photo of the brook getting ready to move up stream to spawn in Long Lake. Also went back up to Brainard Lake this evening. Through fly's on the water for about 4 1/2 hours. Caught and released 27 tonight. But tonight the fish ran a little smaller. Most 6" to 9" with 2 about 11". Beautiful sunsets last evening and tonight too!
