Fall Fishing on Grand Mesa

Post By: Pathway      Posted: 10/7/2015 2:30:20 PM     Points: 534
My insurance agents wife decided to take up fishing after a 40 year hiatus and my friend doesn't fish, so I took on the task of getting her up to speed. We spent 2 hours on Thursday going through the Pathway to Fishing series F+L+P=S and looking at her equipment and the tools shed needed to accomplish the task of catching a fish.
On Sat we headed to the Grand Mesa and Sunset Lake. A week cold front passed through the night before so we didn't know how active fish would be. We started out with an HD Trout but quickly learned that she did not have any skill at casting. We switched to a J Spec to give her more weight an better feel of the lure and after a couple of hours she was pretty consistent in her cast. We were not catching any fish near the surface so I had her change over to a brass colored spoon and I started fishing with an HD Ice in pink. I hooked a fish almost immediately but when I got it in I had snagged a wad of fishing line with a poor little rainbow still attached to the bait hook. I cut him loose and really caught a fish on the next cast. I switched my new fishing partner over to the pink HD Ice ( of course because I am a paid shill for Dynamic Lures I only carry one) and after a few casts she caught a fish. She was absolutely elated at her first catch. After the release we worked on down the south shore and she started getting the presentation down pat. After letting the lure sink to the bottom we used a sharp upward jerk followed by a rapid reel and then a pause followed by an other upward jerk. Most of the fish were in 8 to 13 fow. As it warmed up the fish became more active and I hooked up 5 fish in 5 casts on a 1.5" pink tube on a 1/32 oz head. Later in the afternoon I caught a number of rainbows on the firetiger HD Ice along some large boulders by vertical jigging the lure similar to ice fishing. The HD Ice is fast becoming my go to lure when fish are hanging out in deeper water. I has a fairly fast sink rate and you can quickly cover a lot of water seeking active fish.

At the end of the day the score was Pathway 13 and my new fishing friend 9. She is excited about going out again.

Good work in getting the gal into 9 fish on her first expedition after all those years and zero Power Bait or worms were involved to keep your hands clean. Turnover may be officially over up there now and I can go up there and try the 2 pink Dynamics you convinced me to try. Maybe Brian should double your salary, Lol

If I remember my math correctly 2X0 is still 0. The lake was kind of a milky color. They have pulled Mesa Lake about dry so that may be causing the coloration.
I may hit Vega on Friday.

So Lynn, since you are not selling the HD's, where can I get them in GJ. i will be up there next week and I can never find them in the SG stores. I only have one HD Ice and it is the Fire Tiger - looks like I need some of that pink. Thanks for the great post and for being such a booster for fishing.

Sportsmen' s Warehouse has them on the wall with the rest of the minnow baits. I'm pretty sure Cabelas has them as well. I just caught a bunch of nice fish as Vega yesterday and about half of them came on the pink HD Trout.

The HD Ice are on the isle just south of the wall of minnow baits at SW.

Pathway, was able to get some HD lures at SW. I lucked out cause they had just got in a bunch and had not even put them out yet, so I got my pick. Spent too much money, but hopefully they will last me for awhile.
Thanks again.

You can slip down to the fish hatchery and test them out. I know Jerry does well on the Gunnison using the HD.
