My son and I went Elk Hunting in the Never Summer Wilderness. What a beautiful place that is but elk have all left and Moose are the common sighting. After this we went down and fly fished the inlet at Joe Wright. I had never caught a grayling before and was looking forward to trying.
Austin had caught a bunch this summer and had the technique down. Most any of the popular flies worked. I had the best luck with a size 16 renegade and royal coachman. He used a hand made ant concoction. We caught lots of them. Most were around the 13" side with a few smaller ones. What an amazing fish. The trick if using a fly rod is to strip set the strike. A regular hook set seems to just pull it out of their mouth.
Lake is fairly low and they were only active right before dark and right before the sun comes over the mountain.
beautiful little fish.. wish you would have shared a pic or two. There are many stories on FxR likeyours and learning the hookset. My wife had caught 4 before I caught one.. she doesn't set the hook. lol
Nice work Terry! I knew you would catch those on a Renegade, Lol. They are gorgeous and we do have a two week window to catch them on GM, email me in May to figure it out. Talk more on the FCT since it's only a month away.
