Lake: Valco Ponds (North Gateway Park)

First time fishing the ponds

Over the years I have heard a lot about Valco ponds and cat fish. Decides to give it a go. I swung by about 7am on the way home from work to have a look at some fishing spots an get an idea of where I wanted to fish later in the eve. Each of the three ponds I looked at had different features. One was murky and the other two fairly clear. Accessing the shore line is pretty rough after all of the moisture we had this year. It is very over grown leaving small cut outs to fish from.
I headed down with some fishing buddies and ended up with 5 lines in. We fishes ponds 1 and 3. 2 had a lot of weeds and didn't want to deal with them the first time out. The one cat caught came out of pond 3 on a hot dog. It might have been around 1-1.5 lbs. No takers on liver or cut bait. Fished till about 10p.
I really could not get over the amount of garbage the fishermen leave at these lakes. I thought the reservoir had a problem but the valco ponds far exceed the trash levels I've seen at any fishing hole before. If I were to pick up the trash in the general location I was sitting it would not have made a dent.

Thanks for the report but if you did pick up trash it makes it a bit nicer. I pick up trash at every lake i go to even if its only the tiny Area around me.

Trash bag has become essential tackle in my box.

Nothing worse than seeing our waters looking like dump sites. If everyone would pick up a little each visit it wouldn't take long to get them cleaned up.

I like to try and recycle some of the wasted line while I'm bank fishing. On a recent visit to a local pond that is always full of trash I was able to make four nice hair rigs from the discarded line and hooks that I found.

Face it, some people just suck. Pack a few trash bags ( I use small grocery types ) and do what you can. I realize it may not make much of an impact, but you'll feel better for doing it.

I usually carry some grocery bags but that night I did not have them in my pack. I'm no stranger to picking up other fisherman's recklessly discarded liter on my normal outings. Just amazed at how much debris was abandoned.

I fished those ponds years ago when internet fishing forums didn't exist, about the only thing out there was Colorado Hunting and Fishing News. Back in the day, those ponds and there were only two available to fish, were lightly pressured with little trash. With the unbelievable population boom up and down the front range and these small waters continually put on display over forums, Valco, along with many other smaller bodies of water have really taken a hit.
