Take a Kid Fishing - Wash Park Edition

Post By: led2zep      Posted: 8/19/2015 5:07:34 PM     Points: 883
Last Sunday, my wife and I agreed to watch our friend's kid that day while her mom was in town for a work trip. As part of my community service (wink wink) I decided to take her to Wash Park for some fishing.

She caught two nice Crappies in less than 30 minutes. Coincidentally, here was a walk relay event going on and several people applauded and ran up to clap her hands while reeling in these fun panfish. As you can see, she did not want to touch the fish haha.

It felt so fulfilling seeing a younger generation get as much, if not more, satisfaction from being outdoors and fishing. With so many technological devices distracting children from being adventurous it's our duty to pass down our healthy passions to emerging ages. It's a cycle that I hold close to my heart as my father taught me the same. Hope she's fishing some more back home in Oklahoma.

P.S. I'm signing up for more babysitting opportunities if it gets me more excuses to be on the water some more lol. Come on 2-month old son........grow........get have a Spiderman fishing pole waiting for you!!!!!!

Back when I was a kid(1965) the Denver Post and the VFW used to have a Huck Fin Day . . .the DOW stocked the cannel that runs through Wash park with trout and it was a crazy time . . . .I don't know if this is still a event at Wash park, but if it is . . .you have got to take the kids to it . . .there were prizes for first fish, best Huck Fin & Becky Thacher costumes,an area just for handicapped kids . . .Eagle claw gave away the prized gold platted hooks and all sorts of fun for every one . . .do some homework and see if it still happends.

Called the rec center at Wash park . . .they just had a fishing derby and that's the last one this summer, but he said something about the DOW stocking the small pound some time in Sept . . .you might call Denver Parks&rec and do some homework . . . .you could find a hot spot for the kids for next month!I found out they have about 5 derbys every summer . . .if they use the cannel that run's through the park, talk to your local butcher and see if he can get you some cow "spleen" its kind of like liver(main ingreadent in trout chow) freeze it till its firm, then cut into 1/4 inch size chuncks . . .the best bait for stockers you will ever use!
You want a monster on your hands? Bait the kids hook with this!
P.S. with age come's knowledge!
Give a man a fish . .feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish . . .feed him for life! . . .(a sign on the back of the door in my high school principals office)the only people that got to see the sign were in that office for some reason! HIMMMM?

I really enjoy these kinds of posts. There's nothing better than taking your kids fishing with you and seeing the smiles on their faces when they catch fish. You'll be fishing with your boy before you know it cuz they grow up so fast. These are are the moments you and your kids will remember forever, fins up.
