Ridgeway cutthroat...

Post By: TeamGR3      Posted: 5/6/2015 9:25:21 AM     Points: 1435
Took the family to Ridgeway state park, had a spot to camp 88ft. from the river, we would hit it in the AM. when the sun was still behind the Mountains- beauty of a place never being there. We used crawfish pattern flies-nymphs-and pink eggs, wow cutthroats are some good fighters, we targeted all the pools and boils below all the chutes-very productive. 1 cutty was in the 5lb. range, and we hooked bows, browns and of course cutties that fought better than I ever expected. I even got my 13 yr. old to get off the video phone games, he was surprised to see what he caught. My 13 yr. old used a micro rod reel setup-we watched him fight about 10-15 minutes due to the line stripping action but he pulled 1 in-wshhh... I set him up with a HD brown trout, it was destroyed for all you non fly fisherman.

Nice fish! No Smallies?

No smallies for us in the river-but after speaking to the DOW, she explained that the Federal Gvt. agency that regulates the state park announced a no limit for smallies in the reservoir-so if you are a smallie fan, hit this lake for sure....

Oh I know! I am a big Smallie fan. I'll catch them, but I won't keep them or kill them. They are without a doubt my favorite fish to catch, just making sure they aren't getting in the river below. I just hope they don't do something really stupid and drain the lake to try and get rid of them

Def a cool place to fish. Those cuts do put up a good fight and there are some pigs in that stretch of the river. You guys fish the lake at all? A guy I work with caught a 30" brown out of the lake over the wekend...

I never hit the lake-just the river, I wish I had my old boat, bad back and being a DV vet has slowed me tremendously, slowly getting back into fishing, reason you guys have not seen me on FXR for a minute, looking to hit chatty and the local lakes, but my back has me fishing for about 45 minutes at a time-by summer physical therapy will be done, and I should be posting pics and quips again-tight lines !!!
